Thermowells are designed for additional protection of temperature probes from mechanical damage and corrosion. In case of sensor failure the probe can be easily replaced without process interruption. 

EA811 series thermowells are made of 1.4404 / AISI316L stainless steel tube which is welded to appropriate fitting. Inner diameter of the thermowell tube is ~1 mm larger than diameter of temperature probe protection tube.
